Okay... I'm sure a fair amount of you out there have seen some really bad designs before. I mean really bad, neon blues and pinks and all sorts of piercings and a heart t-shirt on and this and that... on their dog thing. Or whatever.
I just have to put this out there so if you're one of those people who likes to make things, you can start to realize what not to do if you want anyone to remember your character or give a damn at all. Of course, this is just a basic guide, and it's not perfect. If you don't even realize how ridiculous all your personal items in one character look, you need someone to tell you, right?
It's fine if you just want a personal avatar that is for you and you alone, but if you want anyone else to enjoy drawing it, it shouldn't be so full of forced detail that it can't be memorized within a minute or two. No one likes having to double check fifty details as they draw. It's really not fun.
It's hard to express the message, "do what you really want to do" and "make things that aren't bad" at the same time, because sometimes, people are happy with things that I personally consider bad. But, well, here's a look at some advice that I'm offering.
I love most of this and agree with it, but I think the Zekrom comment was unnecessary. Other Legendaries, particularly Kyurem and, to a lesser extent, Reshiram, have been designed in such a complicated way - but they do that to give a certain feel to the character. Zekrom is, I do believe, supposed to give off an atmosphere of power and a machine-like feel in its design. Kyurem has similar detailing to make it look somewhat dead and eerie, and Reshiram has a lot of curves in its design to give it a flowing, natural look.
In contrast, there are Legendaries that are simple, like Mew - one of the simplest Pokemon, and this design helps show its playful and innocent personality.
It's really a case of "There's a time and place for everything."
Detail should only be applied when needed...that's something every artist/designer/animator comes to learn after a while (myself included). I personally don't care if people hate my drawings since it is their opinion. But the advice is useful to me nonetheless and maybe I'll get some friends to check this out too. ^__^
