Beauty is in their eyes - Beholders

Official declaration of hostilities

After a time of intense observation and research by Kadath concerning the race known as “Beholders”, the peaceful territories of Owel, listed below:

Kadath, Auroria, NPO, Rhile, Treefall, Miaoustok, Mew York, Dewclaw, Twin Luxuries, Citrico, Peril, Gloam, Althar, N.E.W. Gnoll Nation, Aromia, Croon Fens

are in agreeance with Kadath’s findings:

Beholders are, by their very nature, hazardous to the lives of other species, and wish for nothing more than to partake in acts of sadism towards other species. They delight in causing pain and misery in other species, and if given the chance, will always take the life of another species.

Were Beholders unintelligent and simple beings, they would be classified simply as dangerous wildlife to be avoided during one’s travels. However, as they have been found intelligent, capable of speech, and social within their own communities, they are hereby classified as an aggressive, hostile, warlike race.

In light of these findings, the peaceful territories of Owel shall stand by Kadath’s recommendations:

Beholders shall be killed on sight if spotted north of Kadath’s already-established quarantine line, and no individual shall be found guilty of any crime for assaulting or killing a Beholder, regardless of any and all possible circumstances.

Information listed below is for the purposes of maintaining awareness only, and should not be considered accurate or complete. Should an individual come into contact with or sight a Beholder, it is highly recommended to flee to the closest locality with a military force and inform them of the Beholder’s presence.

Common elements: Aura, PSI, ???

Hereditary magic: ???

Elemental weaknesses/resistances: No known weaknesses to the four common elements and any of their subtypes were noted during the Beholder’s attack on Kadath’s research party, and the only researcher with an affinity for Spirit and its subtypes was killed in their sleep a week prior to the attack.

Common locations: Nature’s Folly, Heaven’s Keys. Some Beholders have been spotted north of Kadath’s quarantine line, in the Croon Fens. Extreme caution should be exercised when in the vicinity, and no individuals should travel south of Croon Fens.

Climate preference: Unknown. Owel’s Southeastern peninsula is home to a wide variety of climates and temperatures.

Sentience: All Beholders are capable of higher-level thinking, such as the ability to plan ahead, to reason, rationalize, and to understand abstract concepts and principles.

Language: Beholders are able to speak in any language that is required for them to be understood. It is unknown how this is achieved.

Trivia: Beholders have a high level of contempt for jewelry, cosmetics, and anything they regard as an attempt by a non-Beholder race to be fashionable.

During Kadath’s attempt at communicating with the Beholders, the Beholders would only speak with individuals they deemed as beautiful enough to converse with. During these talks, it was thought that progress towards peace and understanding was being made, but the Beholders were merely talking in order to abduct the individuals. They succeeded, despite Kadath’s best magical defenses. It should be assumed the individuals are dead.

In death, a Beholder’s body completely exsanguinates, and their skin decomposes to an unrecognizable state within moments. It should be noted that Beholders possess no skeletal system or organs of any kind, and all that remains of a Beholder post-expiry is their main, middle eye.

Seems a bit too many creatures are 'proficient'. You gotta make it more diverse, dude.

From what I understand, all that means is that the race is capable of a 'human' level of thought and reasoning, and depending, can be considered a civilized race as most species are in the Floraverse world. You saying that is, boiled down to it's essence, akin to saying that more humans should be feral and animalistic for "diversity's" sake.

Yeh, but this isn't a race. This is a plethora of a shit-ton of different species. And, it's not like less intelligent of these things still exist; I'm asking for more of them. You can compare animals like these to humans because there a fuckload of different species but the only sapient species here is human.

Wait, so if they have no skeletal system or organs, how do they hold their form? How would they die? Death would be logically impossible wouldn't it? But then neither would birth. So do they just sort of, exist?

Maybe I'm over thinking this...

At first I found them pretty cute, but after reading the descriptions and taking another look at each 3rd eye, these things are freaking terrifying.

I wonder if there would be a conceivable way for an Imp to breed with an Beholder. I have a feeling that'd take some finaggling though but I'd be ridiculously interested in that.

Whoa, I can't wait for the stories about the Beholders! The more I read about them the more interested I am in them. :D

I'm left with so many questions about these guys, like what happens if one is considered beautiful upon encounter? Will they try to kidnap or will they try to converse first? How do they act towards something they consider ugly? How do you kill one? How to they attack/kill? Are they capable of hypnosis with their large eye? How difficult is it to kill one? Would a Rock Candies be able to fight one(perhaps with spiky stones), or do you have to be a Manticore to even stand a chance?
Argh so many questions but so little answers! I'm hungry for more! :'D

These guys sound like the craziest things!! I can't even imagine what it'd be like seeing one in real life. XD I really like this species!! I'm so down for creating one! I was just wondering if their other two eyes can open at all, like if they can just do it willingly and use all three eyes to see. Or if something else causes their eyes to remain closed all the time.

Out of curiosity, if they have no bones, what's giving their structure foundation? Or are they like ghosts where they control every motion through thoughts and they hold themselves together like that? I'm just really curious about the anatomical physics of these creatures. Still cool either way :)

You do all realize they're called Beholders because of the saying, "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder", right?

I'm probably gonna get a lot of "No shit, Sherlock" type replies, but for those who didn't know, you're welcome.

I called them that because they're an eye-based species, as traditional beholders often are. I just added the pun tagline after the fact!

Oh, okay, you're one of the contributors to this! Cool! Yeah, I just wanted to point out the connection! Can't believe it came after, though! Now I just don't understand what the word Beholders would have to do with them being eye based, like you're saying, now. If there's something that this is all originally inspired from, I'm unfamiliar.

Just looked them up. This versions much more pleasant! :D

-I think the original creature's name did play off of the saying, lol. The sense it makes is just overwhelming, and there's no other reason why it would be named a Beholder. (There's even been games, merch, etc. with the creature, along with the saying.)

I don't think it came after for you, rather, you were late to realize the obvious after the longest time. xD

A "beholder" is simply one who observes, and, as the species depicted here depends on its large middle eye, I called it a beholder. Beauty had nothing to do with it.

but they're so cute and pretty. I would wanna hug one. Is there a reason for their hostility? Or are they just naturally violent? I don't see how such sweet creatures can be violent though.

I agree with a couple here, though, I'd like to draw one of my own, with obvious copyright to you :3

Hmmm. Either the Beholders are outrageously misunderstood, and they are actually trying to build a secret utopia for the beautiful alone... or bones (lots of bones) are eventually going to turn up.

In either case, I am predicting an abrupt and significant increase in Sharptastic Knifesword sales.
