That rouses me somewhat. I look up from my book and out the window at the gray fog that's settled over everything like wet cotton. I imagine breathing it, letting it fill my lungs with gray. All at once, the room is suffocating and I push the window open and the cool air tumbles in and ruffles the pages of my book so that I lose my place.

The spell of the story unravels and some part of me aches to know that the sort of love that exists in the storybooks is never true.

She loves the lines of him.

"Are you listening?"

"… Yes," I say without much conviction.

"Your favorite what?" She asked, smiling. She pushed her tired thoughts aside and concentrated on finding out the answer. After nearly 5 years, she still couldn't help but feel almost giddy when he complimented her. She'd never admit it, of course, but she did.

He smiled and nuzzled his face into the crook of her neck, barely touching the soft skin gently with his lips. "My favorite, that's what."

One time when I was walking to the corner store
I found a penny in a puddle laying on the floor
Old Abe was looking especially lonely so
I picked him up and continued on the go

At that moment it never occurred to me
That what I was holding was a lucky penny!
And the reason to which how I know
Was that moment when I hit the elusive lotto

My jaw dropped; I was at a loss for words
To think a penny could bring luck was absurd
But i kid you not; when I walked out of that store
The skies were blue; the power restored

See, this town had been without electricity for weeks
And I too had gone on such a hunger streak

a hacking cough escaping from water-damaged lungs
sparking with waterlogged microchips. A wisp of smoke
curls from cracked lips, the near-skeletal smirk of someone who
is a ghost in their own shell, a pasty glow about dissolving
skin, sclerae turning to ashen.
Centuries have eroded, crashing and screaming and lamenting,
on their granite knuckles, chipped and wearing in places

the very same knuckles that smashed up every broken
television, every camera lens and the photographer
weilding it, every phone, every string, every
connection to any hint of change.

He held my hand in a crowd
Helped me find myself when I was lost

The one I've been waiting for
I love her so much

I didn't show the hurt that crushed me inside
Didn't let a tear escape that would have betrayed my pain
But tried to smile in his happiness
