Commission does not mean Request

Thu Feb 3, 2011, 5:45 PM

I know some people just never have seen this word before, but commission means paid work.  "Free commission" is an oxymoron because of this!

I received a note the other day,
"I was just wondering if you'd be willing to do a commission of a Pokemon team, but if you are I was also wondering if you would be asking to be paid for such a commission."

Please please please don't be like this person; learn what words mean before you use them in a sentence!

A commission is where you give someone deviantart points or money to draw/paint etc. a picture for you.

People deserve money for the art they make . Pure and simple . If your art gets noticed it isn't selling out to charge for it , it's recognition, ESPECIALLY when speaking about art . Artists always seem to walk on either side of a wide gap when it comes to being genuine and it seems that you can either charge for your art or you can be a starving artist . There is no middle ground .

Man I had someone ask me if I did character requests, even offer to pay which instantly changes it to commission status. I said I don't take free requests, so it'd have to be the commission- then they said they want to keep their money.
I said requests were permanently closed.
They said they'd wait for them to reopen.

._.
I love stupid people.

Maybe it would've been for the best if we, artists, never had to use that word at all! It should be "paid art" xD

Some people use 'Free Commission' to mean a free piece of work that is of commission quality. But I agree, it's a total oxymoron.

Lulz at all the comments

I have to agree though. I have a group that only accepts commissioned works and even though I have the definition on the front page people still can't grasp the concept. Even after reading this journal I got somebody who said "somebody asked me to do it for them, does that count?!"

I don't think you were calling anybody out. It was just a general journal saying what not to do so it doesn't happen more often. You prolly get a million comments/notes a day and when something like that comes in your inbox, I would get frustrated too. :)

It's really annoying to me that people are like "Well some people don't speak/know English well!"

English isn't even my boyfriend's second or third language, and he still takes the time to learn the meanings of words. I'm friends with a ton of foreigners and if they're unsure of a word, they always ask me or someone else what it means before they start using it in a sentence everywhere. And even then, whenever they've been corrected, they tend to thank us and improve.

God, it was so annoying when someone in a chat kept trying to tell me that a commission was a request.

I understand the pain. lol.

And for some reason they were very angry that I wouldn't draw for them. LOL

Agreed. People need to learn what a word means before they use it. :icon0u0plz:

I guess some people are right about the whole 'English not their first language' situation, but begging for free stuff is begging for free stuff, no matter how much you try to justify it.

How can you all be so harsh :/ It's really sad... Ok I understand your feelings pk but you should consider the fact that not everyone here knows English perfectly. And even though I understand pk's point of view I am really mad with the rude and harsh comments I've read as replies -__-

Right in my first sentence I said, "I know some people just never have seen this word before, but commission means paid work," which is to consider the people who don't know what the word means. It seems like you didn't even read my journal at all =/

I don't know how else you expect me to reply to people who are accusing me of making fun of the original person. I tried to make my journal as neutral as possible while expressing that it gets annoying to me that people come t me with that misconception so often... and I'm still getting people (like you) who are seemingly making me out to be a horrible bad guy. I just want people to stop pming me with "I want a commission" only to find out they just want a request!

That's exactly her point. "I know some people just never have seen this word before.." People who are calling this a harsh journal entry are reading far too much into it, and/or are getting absorbed in the comments being made.

She's trying to avoid this problem happening as often by bringing it to the attention of people who don't understand, so!

Oh god, I hate when I get asked similar things... Sentences, they're required for communication!! Who'd have thunk it so?

To be honest I have a weird system, I feel bad if people can't pay for commissions... So I either have a payment plan, request trades with half payment or something... I've even accepted points to help people out that want their characters drawn...

Granted, with a full time job, a boyfriend and everything else I barely have time anymore for some things. . . But I sure as hell try! :D

Wow, I like how some people are criticizing you for simply clarifying something on your journal. You said it in a perfectly good way too - not too harsh, but not too soft either. I believe that quoting an actual person is the best way to give an example, even if it means that the person will be embarrassed and humiliated. Hell, I KNOW I'd be incredibly ashamed of myself too (and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't forget it for a long time either). But that's the reality of things, and I know that great artists like you can't afford to constantly receive the same notes over and over again and not lose patience. I'm glad that you made a journal entry like this - it's not like you always do it. I've seen people making incredibly sarcastic and mean journal entries compared to yours, and yet I don't say a word. If I don't like it, then I won't bother to make a complaint about it.

You're welcome. It's not your fault that people are making rude comments about the anonymous person in response to your journal when you didn't ask them to, and others are blaming you for it. I hope you don't let this get you down, and just continue what you're doing!

I think the problem is that a bunch of like 10-13 year old kids run around this site. Most of em keep to themselves, but some of em like to run up to people and ask ridiculous things of em (like free art). And of course most of em think they can just say what they want ask people to do stuff and it gets done. They see the word commission, see the persons name, and then see no mention of money. So, their child like mind assumes that commission just means asking someone to do something. Not to mention that there are a lot of spoiled kids out there who think things should just be given to them…

yeah i've met some mature people who are still very young. The best thing to do to be mature is to just act your age. It seems counter intuitive but i like 13 year olds a lot better if they act 13 rather than trying to act 16-18. ;p

And the best thing to do is if you don't know a word or concept, just google it :D
